MEMBER OF THE MONTH – June 2008

Rebecca Regnery

Country: United States
Occupation: Deputy Director, International Policy, Humane Society International
Specialty: International treaties
Best part about my job: When I am successful, it affects thousands of animals around the world.
Biggest challenges I face: Limited resources.
The most unusual or exciting thing that's happened to me while working in the field: I wish I truly worked “in the field” more than I do. My version of the field is an international treaty meeting like a CITES CoP. It is exciting when a country’s delegation informs me that they are submitting or retracting a proposal based on my efforts.
Why I like being a member of the MTSG: You can accomplish so much more as part of a large and varied group like the MTSG. I am new but look forward to collaborating with you all and hope to continue to do so after the Congress.
Turtle researcher / conservationist I most admire: Marydele Donnelly. She is a leader in international policy work for sea turtles and has had remarkable success.
When I'm not working on turtles I like to: Work on whales and sharks. I also teach aerobics part-time.
Ten years from now, I hope I will be doing: The same thing but with even more support from governments, secretariats, and industry groups.
