Joanna Alfaro

Country: Peru
Occupation: President of the NGO Pro Delphinus and coordinator of its Sea Turtle Program.
Best part about my job: Having the chance to interact with people of different backgrounds.
Biggest challenges I face: Getting invited for a piece of turtle meat and then talking with the same people about turtle conservation.
The most unusual or exciting thing that's happened to me while working in the field: I was pregnant and coming back from a dangerous port town at 3:30 am. I stopped a taxi at the same corner where the night before a guy was shot. Happy surprise: I ran into the same driver that picked me up when I arrived. I thought he was sent by my son’s guardian angel.
Why I like being a member of the MTSG: I like getting to know the experiences from practiced turtle people.
Turtle researcher / conservationist I most admire: Jack Frazier, because he is always willing to listen to other people.
When I'm not working on turtles I like to: Drink hot cocoa with toast at night next to my husband Jeff when my kids are asleep.
Ten years from now, I hope I will be doing: I would like to continue working in research, conservation and encouraging students to get involved in conservation in South America.
Relevant links to find out more about me and my work: Pro Delphinus
