MEMBER OF THE MONTH – SAMPLE
Michael Coyne
Country: USA
Occupation: Marine Biologist (NOAA), Director (seaturtle.org)
Best part about my job: Having an excuse to buy and play with all of the latest techno-toys
Biggest challenges I
face: Building systems that are easy to use, considered trustworthy and encourage participation
The most unusual or
exciting thing that's happened to me while working in the field: The by-catch. Catching a pair of six foot long alligator gar in a gill net and trying to get them out of the net without tearing it. Catching and releasing over 100 bull sharks or hundreds of tiny cownose stingrays, all in one day! Pulling wave after wave of sargassum out of a gill net. Argh!
Why I like being a member
of the MTSG: The opportunity to make a difference. Although I don’t think it is there yet, there is a lot of potential for the MTSG to make a difference in the world of sea turtle conservation.
Turtle researcher /
conservationist I most admire:
David Owens
When I'm not working on
turtles, I like to: Play with my kids, drink beer and watch football (all in my pajamas)
Ten years from now, I
hope I will be doing: Monkey buttons
