Selina Heppell

Country: USA
Occupation: Assistant Professor
Specialty: Marine ecology, population dynamics, fisheries
Best part about my job: Teaching undergraduates that math really isn’t that bad and traveling to interesting places to assist with sea turtle recovery planning.
Biggest challenges I face: Finding time to do everything I want to do and to the best of my abilities.
The most unusual or exciting thing that's happened to me while working in the field: That’s tough - hauling the big green in the picture out of a pound net and jumping on loggerheads with Colin Limpus were certainly exciting. But the best was working on the beach at Rancho Nuevo in 1997 during the largest arribada in 20 years – 300 nesters! However, I don’t spend nearly enough time in the field....it’s a modeler’s lot in life...
Why I like being a member of the MTSG: I love learning about the efforts of sea turtle biologists and conservationists from all over the world and feeling like I am able to contribute something useful to sea turtle conservation and management.
Turtle researcher / conservationist I most admire: Colin Limpus
When I'm not working on turtles I like to: show my son the wonders of the ocean, especially in warm, tropical areas...
Ten years from now, I hope I will be doing: what I do now, but perhaps with a bit more field work.
Relevant links to find out more about me and my work: Heppell Lab at Oregon State University
