MEMBER OF THE MONTH – AUGUST 2004
Thomas Dellinger
Country: Portugal
Occupation: Associate Professor, University of Madeira
Specialty: Pelagic sea turtle behaviour and ecology
Best part about my job: Being out in the field and understanding pelagic ecology
Biggest challenges I
face: Technical and logistical problems related to working in a high-seas environment. Dividing time between the field and my other duties as faculty staff.
The most unusual or
exciting thing that's happened to me while working in the field: Seeing rare oceanic species from up close, like a jumping sperm whale or a moon fish. Finding in the open ocean our small buoy with all our data from turtle tracking despite bad weather.
Why I like being a member
of the MTSG: Because defending turtles matters and this group is a means to do so.
Turtle researcher /
conservationist I most admire:
Leo Brongersma, Archie Carr in historical perspective.
When I'm not working on
turtles I like to: Photograph wildlife and mainly be with my family
Ten years from now, I
hope I will be doing: Just the same with different questions behind it and more powerful equipment.
