Loggerhead

The loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta) prefers temperate and subtropical waters, but can be found in tropical oceans as well. Classified as Endangered by the ICUN Red List of Threatened Species, this species has seen significant reductions in population size in recent years.

Characterized by a large, broad head and yellow to orange coloration, loggerheads range in size from less than 100kg to 180kg (from Pritchard and Mortimer). The loggerhead turtle is also known as tortue caouanne (French) and tortuga caguama (Spanish).

Detailed taxonomic and morphological information can be found in MTSG's publication, Research and Management Techniques for the Conservation of Sea Turtles.

Pictures of the loggerhead can be found at SEATURTLE.ORG.
